Fire Safety Week

Fire Safety is always a theme I love to teach!  I feel that the more children know what to do and have opportunities to practice those skills the better.  I try to teach it in a fun way so they don't feel afraid, but still understand that it is important.  For this week we each had a turn to role play making a 911 call in front of the class. We also practiced get low and go using a large white sheet to represent smoke.  We practiced stop, drop, roll and cover with felt flames stuck to the children.  We made a fire escape plan and then practiced it using two different escape routes (the front door AND a window).  We also got to hear what a smoke detector sounds like and learned the tools and equipment that firefighters use.  I showed the children the science of fire by showing them how a fire needs fuel, air, and heat in order to ignite and how when we take away any of those it will diminish.  We painted "fire" and read stories about fire trucks & stations.  We graphed our favorite emergency vehicles and played a number dice rolling game with fire trucks, We finished off the week with a field trip to the fire station where we got to see real firefighters and the truck.  They were kind enough to reiterate what we had already learned and show us what it looks like when they are fully dressed in their safety gear.  They also let the children sit in the truck and hear the sirens and see the lights.  They showed us around the station and showed us many of the tools they use to fight fires and save lives.
