Sight Word Fun

We used pointers to read our sight word books and practice the word 'my'.

Y is for Yolk

We practiced our sight words this week by "frying" up some eggs.  The words were inside the yolk to go along with our 'Y' theme.

U is for Under the Umbrella ABC's

We got to take turns going under the umbrella and telling the name and sound of the alphabet letters.  Great for reinforcing the concept of under as well!

S is for Sight Word Squirt Guns

Now that the weather is warming up we try and take advantage of the nice weather and ease some spring fever by going outdoors a bit more.  For this game we got to read sight words that I had written on the driveway using chalk. If the child read the word correctly they got to squirt the word with a squirt gun.  As you can guess this was  a pretty popular game! The kids are doing amazing with sight words so there was a lot of squirting going on!

S is for Solar System

I love this unit!  We have a great time exploring and learning about Space and our very own Solar System with lots of hands on learning activities and art projects. We had a solar system themed Sensory Tub, we counted Star Fighters, built our own rockets (while practicing sight words),  went stargazing for letter stars, made "moons" using a flour/paint combo for an awesome texture and made craters using milk top lids. We also did some real rocket science using a balloon!  The kids LOVED this one of course!

Stampers

This was great for so many reasons!  It was an open ended art project that combined fine motor skills, with letter and number recognition, make-believe play, group social skills, sharing, and sensory.  I'm positive there are more, but you get the idea!

Today we sorted pizza's into the right pizza box by whether it was a capital or lowercase 'P'.

Spontaneous Learning

The kids were doing their morning brainy baskets when one of the kids had the idea to measure how long the alphabet cards stacked together were by using their bodies.  I thought this was fabulous and had to take a picture of true learning in action! Moments like this are so exciting for me as a teacher to experience!

Sight Word Fishing

I wrote the sight words we have learned on colored ping pong balls and had the kids "fish" them out with a mini strainer. When they "caught" one they would read the different words.

Capital and Lowercase Matching

I love how our class rug is not only bright and fun for our room, but it is also a fun learning tool!  The kids successfully worked together and placed all twenty-six lowercase letters with their capital matches.

L is for Light Saber Sight Words

For this fun game the kids get to stack a cup for every sight word they can read.  When they are finished building a fortress they can use the light saber to knock it over. Our new word for the week was like.

J is for Jungle Phonics

Today we sorted words into Real and Nonsense words using "jungle/rainforest" frogs.  This was a fun way to practice reading CVC words!

Alphabet Bingo

We always love a good game of BINGO here at Morning Light Preschool especially when it is helping us learn letters, letter sounds and shapes!

Grab & Go Letter Game

This is always a hit in preschool for learning letters!  It's a fun game where you get to jump up and grab a paper plate off of the ceiling.  After you successfully get it down you name the letter and the sound it makes.  I placed some higher than others to add some challenge to the game.  Great for letter 'J' Jumping too!

I is for Insects

So far this week we have focused on everything insects.  We have played with all kinds of insects in our sensory tub, we've swatted them for sight word practice and we've made coffee filter watercolor butterflies for art.  A few other activities we have done are have and indoor "snowball fight".  For this activity we used coffee filters for letter practice by having the kids tell the name and sound of the letters I had written on the filters.  If they got it right they could ball it up throw it in the snow bucket.  When we were all done making the snowballs we dumped them out and had a really fun time throwing them at each other!  Lots of laughter and smiles on this one! I also let the kids make Chinese New Year lantern's for cutting practice during our Brainy basket time in the morning.  This ended up being much more popular than I had anticipated!  Some of the kids made four a day!  They were cranking them out like crazy and I had to copy many more to keep them satisfied!  What happiness it brings me to have the kids love learning so much!

H is for House

This week we played a game called "Blow my House down".  For this game I had the kids take turns reading the sight words on the bricks.  For each word they knew they could build a part of the "house".  When we were all done building our house as a class we all got to knock it down, and we all know that is the best part!  We also played hide and hop to the H's.  I hid capital and lowercases all around the room and then we all hopped around looking for them.  We played a counting 'hot' chocolate game using real marshmallows that we got to eat when we were done.  We also played sound bingo where I played different sounds.  When the kids heard the sound being played they looked on their bingo board for the picture of the object that made the same sound.  If they had it they could put a bingo marker on it.  We played until everyone got a blackout. The rest of the pictures are some of the things we have been doing in class. Now that we have learned the digraphs ch, sh, th, and wh I decided to add in qu and ph.  The kids are doing great and seem to enjoy learning them. We are also still using our sight word books with witchy fingers for pointing and each day we do some paperwork to practice phonics, math, writing and coloring skills.

H is for Hawaii

What a great place to think about in January!  It gets pretty cold here so it's nice to put our thoughts somewhere warm and tropical even just for a little while! This week we made these cute pineapples!  They were great for practicing scissor skills as well as a super cute decoration for our class! As we thought about travel overseas we used an airplane math page to practice our adding skills. We used my large wooden dowels to practice segmenting words into syllables.  Of course, the words we practiced with were Hawaiian ones such as: Lei, ocean, sea turtle, volcano, pineapple, sand, hibiscus, hula dancers/fire dancers, coral etc. We also made our own Hawaiian lei's which in addition to being a darling craft is also perfect for the fine motor skill of beading! And for our grande finale we had one of our sweet mom's who grew up in Hawaii come in and teach us a really cute Hula dance called the Hukilau.  She also taught us the story and meaning behind it.  SO fun!
