Spider Web Science

We learned all about spiders this week and how the reason they are able to walk on their own web without sticking is because there is oil on their legs. We demonstrated this concept by using our fingers to represent first a regular bug without oil.  We then "walked" across a "spider web", which was a piece of contact paper, sticky side up, with a web drawn on it with marker.  We learned that since regular bugs do not have oil on their legs they stick to the web and become food for the spider.  Next we dipped our fingers in a little oil and again "walked" across the "web".  This time we found that we did not stick and were able to get around the web with ease.  Notice the web is octagon shaped.  I threw that in there too since we were focusing on the octagon shape this day.
