This week we learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and some of the things he did as part of the civil rights movement. We read a children's book Martin's Big Words and afterwards had a discussion about fairness and equality. The kids generally really enjoy this unit. Many of my kids read the book during free reading time in the morning throughout the month. We used the theme as a way to get us thinking about ways we could also help others. We made hats using the kids handprints and I had them tell me ways that they could be a helpful person.
