This is one of my favorite experiments to do with the kids because the results are just awesome! I teach the kids about how many animals stay warm in cold climates because of their fat. I use shortening (represents the animal fat), Ziploc sandwich bags and ice-water. I make a "glove" by scooping shortening into to bags. I close the tops on both bags then stuff them into another bag . That way they can slip their hand into the bag and have it surrounded by the shortening without getting messy. Next I have them place the glove hand and their other bare hand into the water at the same time. They almost always pull the bare hand out in just seconds. The other hand can stay for a long time and we have found that it keeps the hand much warmer than the non-covered hand. My preschoolers just love doing science experiments and this is a fun one to do!
