Z is for Zoo-Animal Fats Demonstration

This is a pretty interesting experiment.  We talked about how animals body fat keeps them warm even when it is really cold outside.  We used a bowl of ice-water and two bags of shortening to demonstrate this.  I basically stuffed two ziploc bags filled with animal fat (shortening).  Then I took those two bags and put them inside a third ziploc bag.  This made kind of a glove that the kids could cover their hand with.   I then had them put the hand with the animal fat glove on in the water at the same time they put their bare hand in the water.  We then compared which hand felt warmer.  This was really cool to see how the animal fats really did keep their hand completely warm and comfortable.  They all got to take a turn and each child made the same observation for this activity.
